The Mississauga Food Bank’s 2022 Spring Food Drive, sponsored by Scotts Canada Ltd., raised a grand total of $442,293 and exceeded their food goal of raising 247,729 pounds of food to fight hunger in Mississauga.
The Mississauga Food Bank has seen a drastic increase in people relying on its network of food banks during the pandemic and has more than doubled its output of food in the community. Before the pandemic, 19,000 neighbours turned to The Mississauga Food Bank for food and now almost 30,000 neighbours rely on them. With this increase in need combined with the rising cost of housing and food, The Mississauga Food Bank is being stretched to provide additional support.
The impact of these rising costs can already be seen amongst food bank users. The Mississauga Food Bank served almost 15% more food bank users in March 2022 compared to the month before. And from September 2021 to March 2022, the food bank saw a 30% increase in food bank users. This is why they need continued community support.
“While the community has begun to recover from the pandemic, those who were already living paycheque to paycheque are still in critical need and will take longer to recover from this crisis,” says Meghan Nicholls. “That’s why we are grateful for the compassion and generosity you’ve shown during our Spring Food Drive and your continued support will ensure that we can meet the needs of our vulnerable neighbours as they try to keep up with the rising costs of living, inflation and food.”
As the returning sponsor of this campaign, Scotts Canada Ltd. generously matched the first $10,000 donated. “We are proud to have partnered with The Mississauga Food Bank again this year for their Spring Food Drive and to play a part in fighting food insecurity alongside the community,” says Karen Stephenson, Director, Regulatory Affairs & Stakeholder Relations at Scotts Canada Ltd.
The Spring Food Drive was a success thanks to the outpouring of support from the community. From donating funds and food to hosting your own fundraisers and food drives, volunteering your time and coming out to local grocery stores to donate, your support is putting healthy and appropriate food on the tables of neighbours in need.
