In these uncertain times, hunger can be just around the corner. But thanks to your support, families have somewhere to turn when the unthinkable happens.
“It’s hard, feeling like you can’t achieve your dreams.”
Chris*, a father of two who spent 25 years working long hours on an assembly line, sighs. For him, those dreams were simple. Buy a house for his family, and save enough to retire comfortably.
But when the automotive plant closed in 2023, he lost his job, turning his life upside down.
“I feel like I’m starting from zero,” he shares. “I’ve applied to over 100 jobs, and nothing. I’ve had to use my severance and my retirement savings just to survive.”
“I’m on Ontario Works now, but it’s only $1,200 a month, and our rent alone is $1,700,” Chris says. Instead of saving for his family’s future, Chris found himself weighed down by constant stress and uncertainty—not knowing if he’d be able to keep a roof over his family’s head or keep food on the table. But his family is his whole world, and he knew he had to find a way to take care of them.
“I have to survive. I have kids to feed,” he says with resolve. Thankfully, Chris found the food and support his family deeply needed—thanks to generous people like you.
At his neighbourhood food bank—one of the 60+ agency members you support through Food Banks Mississauga—Chris was welcomed with open arms, and received the healthy food he needs to take care of his family.
But your support means much more than a full table. It means much-needed stability and peace of mind, allowing Chris to focus on his ongoing job search, instead of worrying about his family facing hunger.
Most importantly for Chris, your support means he can help his two sons grow up healthy and strong, and reach their full potential.
“My dream was to buy a house and prepare for retirement, but that has vanished. I can’t buy a house now. I don’t even have enough for rent. But at least I can help my kids get educated and achieve the dreams that I couldn’t,” he shares.
It means the world to Chris, having somewhere to turn for support, and good neighbours like you beside him. “They’re good people. I appreciate it,” he says.
