Executive Director, Chris Hatch, Urges Community to Give Food and Hope for the Holidays
On the heels of the most successful Thanksgiving Campaign to date, The Mississauga Food Bank is launching the Annual Holiday Drive – with hopes of raising $500,000 and 250,000 lbs of food to ensure hungry neighbours in Mississauga get the nutritious food they need this holiday season.
The Thanksgiving Campaign was more successful this year than ever before, raising food and funds to provide food for 883,536 meals to hungry neighbours. However, due to growing need in the community, the Food Bank estimates this food will only provide meals for 110 days – meaning this food will run out in January.
“We’ve seen a 13% increase over last year in the number of visits to our neighbourhood food banks and emergency food pantries. We projected a 6% increase, but the need is even greater than we anticipated. In order to ensure we can feed neighbours into the new year, we need our community to respond by giving their neighbours food and hope for the holidays.” Chris Hatch, Executive Director
The Mississauga Food Bank provides food for over 244,000 meals to hungry neighbours each month. Donations to the 2017 Holiday Drive will help provide meals and support to children, families, and seniors who’ve fallen on hard times and can’t make ends meet. The Holiday Drive is generously sponsored by the Nissan Canada Foundation, Rabba Fine Foods, Welbilt, and Just Energy. We are incredibly thankful for their support.
Here are four ways you can get involved in the Holiday Drive:
- Volunteer – We have opportunities for volunteer food sorters, reception, support and truck drivers!
- Organize a Food Drive/Fundraiser – Get your workplace or friend group involved!
- Come to an Upcoming Event – there are tons of things to do! (Like come to our Holiday Open House)
- Make a Financial Gift – a donation of just $2 provides 5 meals to your neighbours.
