Less than 1% Increase in Thanksgiving Drive Donations Compared to 20% More Food Bank Usage in Mississauga
Food Banks Mississauga closes its 2025 Thanksgiving Drive, raising $848,513
Food Banks Mississauga’s 2025 Thanksgiving Drive, sponsored by Keurig Dr Pepper Canada, ran from September 8 to October 17, raising $848,513 – less than 1% more than last year. The campaign closes on the heels of the release of their annual Impact Report that details record-breaking food bank usage in Mississauga.
Mississauga continues to experience a growing food insecurity emergency, with over 503,000 food bank visits made last year to Food Banks Mississauga and its network of 60+ food programs ᠆ the highest ever in the organization’s history. This reflects a 20% year-over-year increase, outpacing the donations received.
With the funds raised, Food Banks Mississauga can provide healthy, fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable food for over 848,000 meals to neighbours experiencing food insecurity, through its hub and spoke model. This means your support goes beyond one organization to reach neighbours in need across the city. And as the city faces a critical time, the organization continues to raise funds for essential operations.
“In the face of record-high visits to our network food programs, we couldn’t provide food for neighbours in need without our community’s support and efforts. It’s because of you that we reached our goal and can meet the growing demand by providing immediate relief to our neighbours facing food insecurity this fall season,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga. “The relief we provide is much-needed but temporary. Life continues to be unaffordable as the costs of food, housing, and other essentials continue to rise. Last year, almost 30% of our food bank visitors had employment. And almost 40% of food bank visitors were new visitors, showing that folks are falling on hard times for the first time and turning to a food bank for support. Underfunded social assistance programs continue to not be prioritized by the provincial and federal governments, which are keeping our neighbours from making ends meet. While we advocate for long-term solutions, we can continue providing emergency food support because of your generosity.”
