The Mississauga Food Bank’s 2022 Give 30 Ramadan fundraiser raised a total of $54,293, thanks to donations being matched by a generous anonymous donor.
The funds and food raised during the Give 30 campaign this Ramadan are vital for The Mississauga Food Bank to continue to serve neighbours in need as the community faces a higher cost of living, inflation, and soaring gas and food costs. According to Canada’s Food Price Report, the average family of four in Canada is predicted to spend an extra $966 on food in 2022, which will result in a total annual grocery bill of $14,767. For vulnerable neighbours who are already stretched thin and living paycheque to paycheque, they do not have the means to keep up with these rising costs.
The Mississauga Food Bank can already see the impact that these rising costs are having on those who are most vulnerable. They served almost 15% more food bank users in March 2022 compared to the month before. And, from September 2021 to March 2022, the food bank saw a 30% increase in food bank users.
“Our neighbours who live in precarious situations already face the tough choice of what to sacrifice in order to make ends meet. Having to decide between paying rent or buying groceries, paying for a medical expense or covering a utility bill are just a few examples. That’s why we can never thank our community enough for choosing to support their hungry neighbours this Ramadan,” says Meghan Nicholls. “I am humbled by your compassion and generosity. The fight to end hunger in Mississauga is not over and we are grateful to our supporters for continuing to lend a helping hand to neighbours in need.”
Give 30 has partnered with The Mississauga Food Bank since 2014 to encourage everyone, regardless of faith, to show empathy for those who experience hunger on a regular basis by donating to local food banks during Ramadan.
Thank you to community members who donated this Ramadan by hosting a fundraiser or food drive, collecting donations at an iftar, volunteering, or by making a financial donation.
