Habiba’s family does everything they can to take care of each other. But life’s unexpected challenges left them facing food insecurity.

“The food bank came at a very, very precious time,” says Habiba*, gathering nutritious food to feed her family of five.

Habiba lives with her daughter, her son-in-law, and two young grandsons. Their household relies on her limited pension, as well as her daughter’s wages. But with her son-in-law not yet able to work in Canada, a grandson living with disabilities, and health issues of her own, they’re struggling to make ends meet.

For families like theirs, day-to-day challenges like an unexpected expense can leave them on the edge of food insecurity. But thanks to your generosity, Habiba has somewhere to turn to help her care for her family, no matter what challenges they face.

“It is a blessing for so many people.”

“As we get old, we have so many medical situations, so many medications… Even though the government helps, it’s not enough.

In my situation, I had to get a CPAP machine. It was over $600. I wouldn’t have had the money to feed my family and take care of my health if it weren’t for the food bank. It’s a blessing for so many people.”

“We never expected to get the help we did. We got enough food that we didn’t have to worry for some time,” Habiba shares.

Habiba’s family is originally from Brazil, and she is grateful that she can choose ingredients at her neighbourhood food bank to prepare cherished recipes from her homeland to share with her grandsons.

She is also especially grateful for the fresh produce.

“We’re dealing with health issues, so we need to be selective in what we eat. The food bank provides a lot of fresh vegetables, which is very helpful.”

“We’re depending on your kindness”

“It’s so important, because many people are eventually going to need help. You know, there are lots of families out there facing disability, emotional anxiety, and need, just like us.”

“It means the world that we can come here. Thank you so much. We are depending on your kindness and your open hands.”
