During Asian and South Asian Heritage Month, we are sharing the stories of Asian leaders in our community, team members, and Asian and South Asian-led organizations that we at The Mississauga Food Bank are proud to work with.

Meet Nazish Tayab, Director of Programs at Sakeenah Homes!

Sakeenah Homes runs transitional shelters, conducts remote casework, and provides holistic services for clients to get immediate assistance and be on the path of self-sustainability. After Nazish volunteered with different shelter organizations, she decided to devote more time and commitment to working for an organization that is addressing the needs of Muslim women and children. “I have always had a passion to help others. At Sakeenah Homes, all of our work is based on cultural, racial, and religious sensitivity. The pandemic tripled the need for our services last year and we are working to meet the demand by expanding our proven and impactful programming. The support of our community partners and donors is essential to helping us reach our goals of service.”

Nazish wants everyone to know that helps is always available at Sakeenah Homes. “We work with a holistic approach and provide services with an Islamic lens. Our People’s Market and shelters provide halal food too. Culturally appropriate food items are what give clients the comfort of being in a shelter, for example. Some children only eat foods from their cultures and when that gets taken away, it’s difficult for them to adjust to their surroundings.”

Nazish shares more on the People’s Market that opened earlier this year. “We created a food shopping experience where anyone who signs up for the program can come and shop for groceries free of charge. Giving people who are facing food insecurity the opportunity to pick their groceries with dignity was our goal.”

Nazish, thank you for everything you do for your community!
