Food Banks Mississauga Partners Once Again with Nissan Canada Foundation, Aiming to Raise $2.5 Million for the Holidays

A partnership that gives back in a time of emergency

Sponsored by Nissan Canada Foundation, Food Banks Mississauga’s 2024 Holiday Drive launches today with an unprecedented goal of $2.5 million. The campaign runs until January 10, 2025. This comes at a crucial time as Food Banks Mississauga saw the fastest-growing food bank usage in all of Ontario last year and continues to see a rapid increase.

It was another record-breaking year when Food Banks Mississauga and their network of 60+ agency members served over 56,000 food bank visitors, including almost 16,000 children, from June 2023 to May 2024 – 58% more than the previous year. They saw a total of over 420,000 visits – almost an 80% year-over-year increase.

“We are experiencing a tidal wave of demand with no sign of slowing down. 1 in 37 Mississauga residents relied on a food bank in 2019 and now it’s 1 in 13,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga. “As we head into the colder months, your neighbours in need are falling further behind and need your support. It’s a sobering thought to think about those who can’t spend the holidays around a meal with their families — but one that we can change together. Every gift, no matter the size, can make a difference for your neighbours to have food on their tables. We need your help to reach our biggest goal ever of $2.5 million as we try to keep up with our city’s growing need. Thanks to our community’s support and valued partners like Nissan Canada Foundation, we can provide immediate relief today and advocate for policy change to end food insecurity tomorrow.”

“We are proud to partner once again with Food Banks Mississauga to support those in need this holiday season,” says Tara Willis, Senior Manager of DEI and Philanthropy at Nissan Canada Inc. “Giving back to the local communities where we live and work is what the Nissan Canada Foundation strives for. Therefore, we will continue to work alongside organizations who share our commitment to make a long-lasting, tangible difference in people’s lives.”

By donating financially to the Holiday Drive, the value of monetary donations is maximized as Food Banks Mississauga can source fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable nutritious food in bulk and at prices lower than retail while reaching neighbours in all corners of Mississauga. For every dollar donated, they can provide food for one meal to neighbours in need. That means $90 can feed a child for an entire month.

Ways you can get involved:

  • Make a monetary donation;
  • Create a personalized fundraising page and rally your coworkers, community, school, and family to raise much-needed funds;
  • Find their volunteers at your local grocery store in the coming weeks, where you can donate funds or food.

The 2024 Holiday Drive runs until January 10, 2025.
