Food Banks Mississauga Experienced Highest Annual Visits in its History
Revealing food insecurity remains an emergency in Mississauga as latest Impact Report is released
Over half a million visits were made by Mississauga residents to Food Banks Mississauga and its network of 60+ food programs last year – the highest ever in the organization’s history and a 20% increase from the previous year.
Food Banks Mississauga releases its annual Impact Report, marking a record-breaking 503,705 visits last year. The report shares how food bank visits per household increased from an average of 3 to 5 times per year in 2019 to 10 times per year today.
“The staggering increase in food bank visits shows us that folks are accessing food support services more frequently, and those who rely on food support are struggling to get back on their feet and are relying on us for longer,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga. “Food insecurity in Mississauga continues to worsen, and those who are most at risk continue to bear the brunt of the increased cost of living and inflation, and we can see that reflected in the findings from our latest Impact Report. 90% of our revenue comes from non-government sources, and it’s only thanks to our community’s support and generosity that we can continue providing food to our neighbours today while advocating for policy change for tomorrow.”
In their last fiscal year (June 2024 – May 2025), Food Banks Mississauga and its network of 60+ food programs provided healthy food to 48,539 food bank visitors. 28% were children, indicating that those who are already vulnerable are more likely to experience food insecurity. 39% were new food bank visitors, showing that many Mississauga residents are falling into poverty and using a food bank for the first time.
The report also highlights how the community’s support enabled Food Banks Mississauga to reach neighbours where they are, and how the community can raise its voice and call on its elected officials to support those living at or below the poverty line and facing food insecurity.
