Food Banks Mississauga Launches 2025 Spring Drive
As they enter a season of potential uncertainty
Food Banks Mississauga launches its 2025 Spring Drive, which runs from March 10 to April 30, 2025, with the goal of raising $1,000,000. Scotts Canada Ltd. is the returning sponsor for the Spring Drive and will match donations dollar for dollar. After Mississauga seeing the fastest growing rate of food bank use in the province in 2024, this campaign is coming at a time when Food Banks Mississauga is facing uncertainty with how potential economic pressures from south of the border will impact food bank use and follows their recent announcement of lay-offs carried out to prioritize food provision to food bank visitors.
Those facing food insecurity already live with a level of precariousness. For a single parent like Tanya* who is the sole provider for her son Theo*, she is doing everything she can to make ends meet. Tanya works full time and already lives very modestly, sharing a small home with two other single moms and their combined six children, making for a very full house.
“Without generous community donors, parents like Tanya would have to choose between keeping a roof over their heads or putting food on the table. The cost of living continues to soar, and most months are a struggle for food bank visitors who must rely on us for food support. With the unpredictability of policy changes from the U.S., we are preparing for more of our neighbours needing food support,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga. “We are already operating at maximum capacity, serving food bank visitors a total of over 420,000 times last year – almost an 80% year-over-year increase. That’s why we need the community to give generously during our Spring Drive. Every dollar you donate will be matched by Scotts Canada Ltd., doubling your support for the 1 in 13 Mississauga residents utilizing food banks across the city.”
Geneviève Potvin, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Stakeholder Relations at Scotts Canada Ltd., emphasizes the importance of participating in this fundraiser:
“The priority actions of our commitment to the community at Scotts Canada are focused on food security and the creation of edible gardens, topics that are so very topical at the moment! Once again this year, we are very pleased to contribute to the vital cause of food banks. Supporting the 2025 Spring Drive helps to contribute to the health of people who really need it and also to give hope back to communities by spreading a message of sharing and empathy. Our partnership with Food Banks Mississauga is long-standing, and we are keen to maintain our link with this valuable organization.”
By donating financially to the Spring Drive, the value of donations is maximized as Food Banks Mississauga can source and distribute fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable food in bulk and at prices lower than retail while reaching neighbours in all corners of Mississauga through their network of 60+ food programs. Thanks to Spring Drive sponsor Scotts Canada Ltd., every dollar donated will be matched to double the impact. That means a donation of just $84 will provide TWO families with a week of food from their monthly visit to a food program.
