The Salvation Army and Global Family Community Centre Join Food Banks Mississauga’s Network

Network expands to alleviate increased demand

Leading a network of over 60 food programs across Mississauga, Food Banks Mississauga announces the addition of three new Neighbourhood Food Banks to their network – The Salvation Army Cawthra, The Salvation Army Meadowvale, and Global Family Community Centre.

With the demand for food increasing at an alarming rate as the food insecurity emergency in Mississauga grows, this network expansion adds 38 service hours each week to support even more neighbours living with food insecurity while increasing equitable access to food bank services. Food bank visitors now have more options for Neighbourhood Food Banks to visit. By sharing a common database, the network organizations will have access to the same information and records to improve resource allocation across the city.

“We’re excited to welcome The Salvation Army Cawthra, The Salvation Army Meadowvale, and Global Family Community Centre as Neighbourhood Food Banks to our network,” says Nicole Norris, Director of Programs & Agency Network at Food Banks Mississauga. “With these three new additions, food bank visitors now have more options and flexibility to get the essential food support they need. We continue to see food insecurity rise in Mississauga and with it being officially declared an emergency, this expansion couldn’t come at a more crucial time.”

Food Banks Mississauga is proud to join forces with The Salvation Army, a historied community services organization, to add their locations in Mississauga to the city’s leading emergency food network and streamline their collective resources. Existing Food Banks Mississauga agency member, Global Family Community Centre invested in their program to evolve from a Pantry (providing 2+ days of food) to a Neighbourhood Food Bank (providing 7+ days of food), increasing their physical, volunteer, and administrative capacity each month to better serve the growing need in the community.

“The Salvation Army in Mississauga is excited to be working together with Food Banks Mississauga to ensure all Mississauga residents have better access and availability to food surety. We want to see a healthy and happy Mississauga,” says Joel Binner, Director of Community and Family Services at The Salvation Army Mississauga Community Church.

“This groundbreaking shift from a Pantry to a Neighborhood Food Bank marks a new era in our mission, deepening our partnership with Food Banks Mississauga and joining a larger, unified network of support,” says Daniel Dihele, Executive Director at Global Family Community Centre. “This evolution empowers us to better serve our community, providing not just food, but sustainable, comprehensive resources that will create lasting, transformative change for those in need.”

Food Banks Mississauga and their network serve 1 in 13 Mississauga residents, a 58% year-over-year increase. They estimate serving twice as many food bank visitors by 2027 – over 100,000 Mississauga residents.
