From September 19 – 25, 2022, the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign raised a record-breaking $15 million across Canada.
In Mississauga, $160,642.34 was raised in Tim Hortons restaurants across the city, which will be split equally between joint recipients, The Mississauga Food Bank and Community Living Mississauga.
“These funds are coming at a time when the need is more urgent than ever, and we are thankful to Tim Hortons restaurant owners for once again choosing us as a recipient for the Smile Cookie campaign and to our community for purchasing an astounding number of Smile Cookies in support of their neighbours in need,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO. “Before the pandemic, 19,000 neighbours relied on The Mississauga Food Bank. Now, over 30,000 neighbours rely on us and our network of 50+ agencies across the city. That’s a 60% increase that we are trying to keep up with, and the need is only increasing. This is why we continue to need our community’s support as we head into the holiday season.”
In its last fiscal year (June 2021 – May 2022), The Mississauga Food Bank reported that 46% of food bank users in Mississauga have gone into debt to buy food. And 45% of food bank users have gone without food for at least one meal each month. For these vulnerable neighbours, the rising cost of living means they will have to choose between buying food and paying for other necessities. As long as neighbours face food insecurity and this urgent need exists, your continued support ensures The Mississauga Food Bank will be here to provide and promote access to healthy and appropriate food as the cost of living continues to rise.
