Advocating for a Food-Secure Mississauga

When you think of volunteering at Food Banks Mississauga, you might picture sorting shelf-stable food in our warehouse.

Our volunteers work hard to provide food to neighbours who need it but they also help advocate to decrease barriers preventing food bank visitors from living poverty-free. Just ask Anjaya, one of our dedicated Advocacy Allies.

Anjaya started volunteering in 2022.

“I wanted to find ways to stay connected to my local community,” she shared. “Volunteering at Food Banks Mississauga, I’ve met great people, all while supporting local organizations fighting for change.”

As an Advocacy Ally, she works with her community and other local organizations to advance a common vision: a Mississauga where everyone is thriving and has access to food.

“It’s important to make sure our community members’ voices are heard,” Anjaya says. “Food Banks Mississauga connects with policymakers to educate them about the harsh realities of food insecurity in Mississauga, so they can make informed decisions.”

“I’m honoured to be a part of this work. If you’re considering volunteering, do it! It feels so rewarding to make a difference in our community and it’s a great way to stay connected and make some wonderful friends.”

THANK YOU to Anjaya and all of our incredible volunteers and donors! You are at the heart of everything we do.
