Susan is often the first face people see when they come through the doors here at Food Banks Mississauga, and her welcoming smile is well known. As one of our volunteer front desk receptionists, she brings warmth and compassion to everyone she meets.

After retiring, Susan sought out volunteer opportunities to give back to the community, and found her way to us. As the first point of contact for visitors, Susan not only answers phones and emails, but also provides a listening ear.

“I’m honoured that people share their stories. I see the strength in people who have endured economic hardships, lost their homes, or fled war-torn countries — but they are still smiling and so grateful. I really see the best of people in difficult times.”

One moment that stuck with Susan was when a woman called in tears, hesitant to seek help because she didn’t think she “deserved” it. Susan reassured her: “The reason food banks exist is to help people live and not become homeless.”

For Susan, volunteering is about kindness, patience, and inclusivity. “I see these wonderful people trying to help others, and I want to be a part of that.”
