You’re Helping Farwah’s Family Find their Footing
After arriving in Canada with four young children, Farwah’s family faced the daunting challenge of starting over. Thanks to caring neighbours like you, they have the support they need to keep moving forward.
Farwah* and her husband arrived in Mississauga hoping to build a better future for their four children. But starting over in a new country is never easy.
“At the moment, I’m not working. I had seasonal work, but after a few months, it was reduced,” Farwah shares. “My husband works full-time—but it’s a first job, so it’s minimum wage.”
Making sure her four growing kids have enough to eat is a constant worry for Farwah.
“When we go to shop for food, it’s like $100, and that lasts only a few days. They’re kids. They need a lot of energy. They eat a lot.”
Thankfully, Farwah’s colleague told her about her neighbourhood food bank, where her family found a much-needed lifeline during those first months of uncertainty.
Farwah didn’t know what to expect when she first walked through the doors. What she found inside was a warm welcome, dignified treatment and compassion.
“Everyone was really kind,” Farwah shares. “I didn’t feel judgment. I was nervous, but they made me feel like it was okay to be here.”
Farwah was also pleasantly surprised by the choice of healthy food she was offered.
“I thought maybe you would just be given something pre-packed to last a few days,” she says.
Instead, she was able to choose what was best for her family.
“Where we come from, we didn’t have a lot of choice, freedom, or options,” Farwah shares. “And it’s actually very good quality food.”
Even in challenging times, Farwah’s strength and resilience shines through.
“I don’t see anything as a struggle,” she shares. “I try to see every new day as a new opportunity. I think, ‘Today, we have food. Tomorrow, we’ll be okay, we’ll figure it out. And that’s how things start opening up.”
“I’m so grateful. Because of this help, we can save a little and move forward in this journey of ours.”
