About the role

As a Tax Clinic Volunteer, you will act as a tax preparer to complete tax returns for neighbours with a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Responsibilities

  • Complete client income tax returns following the Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.

  • Attend training sessions as required/requested.

  • Conduct virtual sessions using meeting software (Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

  • Use EFILE tax preparation software to file tax returns electronically.

  • Consult the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) hotline for assistance with specific tax return questions. 

  • Maintain strict confidentiality on all taxpayer information.

  • Verify taxpayer identity prior to filing.

  • Ask questions and clarify taxpayer information as required.

Qualifications

18 years or older, with a mature and positive attitude.
Possess a strong understanding of the Canadian tax system and tax filing processes.
Must be located in Canada.
Provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Police Check issued within the past three years.
Having one or more years of experience in tax clinics is preferred.
Proficient with computers and virtual meeting software.
Must have a Windows-compatible laptop with sufficient storage to install EFILE software.
Complete the CVITP application and required online training, selecting Food Banks Mississauga as your host organization.
Demonstrate a professional, respectful attitude at all times.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Empathy, patience, and sensitivity to the unique needs of clients.
Proficiency in additional languages, such as Arabic, Spanish, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil, Polish, or others, is an asset.

4-6 hours per week with a minimum of three hours per shift
