Almost $50,000 Raised this Ramadan

As Food Banks Mississauga projects they will provide almost 10 million pounds of food this year

Food Banks Mississauga’s annual Give 30 fundraising campaign raised $49,327, thanks to the community’s support. Donations were matched by Give 30 sponsor Habib Canadian Bank.

Food Banks Mississauga is projecting they will provide almost 10 million pounds of food through its network of 65+ agency members this year. This is an increase of almost 70% compared to last year.

“Thank you to our community members who donated funds, food, time, or their platforms this Ramadan – every action you take is vital in supporting neighbours facing food insecurity across Mississauga. While I’m grateful for all we have achieved together this Ramadan, the need for food support is not slowing down. From June to April, we served 53,078 food bank users, which is a 62% increase from the same time last year,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga.

“There is still more work to be done as we advocate for our government to make real investments in social assistance programs to sustainably help those who are most vulnerable. Thank you to our supporters who stood by us this Ramadan to ensure our neighbours have food today, and I encourage you to contact your elected officials to tell them that poverty and food insecurity alleviating solutions need to be prioritized so folks don’t need food banks tomorrow.”

As the need for food continues to skyrocket across the city and is unlikely to decrease anytime soon, Food Banks Mississauga depends on your support year-round. 8% of the city’s population will have turned to a food bank by the end of May, and as the summer months approach, this need will increase even more as school meal programs shut down.
