You Help Lighten the Load for Families Across Mississauga

Ada is one of many parents in Mississauga juggling heavy responsibility and hard decisions. With the help of caring neighbours like you, her family has a place to turn for help.

With the rising cost of food, families with teenagers know the struggle to keep food on the table. But for Ada*’s family, it became impossible.

Ada would do anything for her family. In spite of her own health issues, she devotes her days to caring and advocating for her two teens with special needs.

Her husband, Jon, brings in the family’s only source of income— but with the family’s complex needs, it isn’t enough to make ends meet.

Braces, glasses, cochlear implants, and hearing-aid batteries add up faster than the family can keep up.

“Medical expenses will eat you alive,” she sighs. “We have insurance, but it doesn’t cover enough. Last year we spent $12,000, and that was just for one kid.”

“IT’S INCREDIBLY STRESSFUL”

“It’s incredibly stressful. But my daughter needs to hear. My son needs his medication. My family needs to eat.”

Add on soaring food costs, and Ada worried deeply about feeding her family the healthy food they need. “If you have kids, if you have a restrictive diet, eating costs an arm and a leg,” she shares.

Thankfully, a friend told Ada about her neighbourhood food bank, where she found a much-needed lifeline.

“IT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.”

From her very first visit, Ada felt welcomed. Friendly staff walked her through the process, learned her family’s needs, and made sure she could take home nourishing food that fit her family’s special dietary requirements.

She’s especially grateful for the fresh fruits and vegetables for her family—“It’s so welcome, because it helps keep everyone healthy.”

“It’s a great help. When I can save money on groceries, that money can then go towards my son’s medication or my daughter’s hearing equipment.”

“A big thank you to everyone who donates and volunteers,” Ada says. “It really does make a difference.”
