Today we’re spotlighting Aamal, one of our volunteers!

Aamal has been volunteering with us for over a year now. Shortly after arriving in Canada, she searched online for volunteer opportunities and found Food Banks Mississauga (and we’re so glad she did!) Aamal says she continues to volunteer with us because of the diversity and inclusive nature of the people she works alongside.

Aamal serves weekly as a Coordinator for our Food Bank 2 Home Delivery Program, providing administrative support – including printing packing lists and order forms, making phone calls to folks who are in the program, and responding to emails and voicemails.

“Because of my role as Food Bank 2 Home Coordinator, I am in constant contact with our clients and it makes me realise the impact and importance of the work we do here, how integral us volunteers are, and how much we are appreciated.”

In the summer months of 2023, Aamal also volunteered her time as a Research Assistant, conducting surveys with food bank users to provide insight into the experiences that they have with Food Banks Mississauga and our network of 60+ agency members, as well as an understanding of the social, economic, and health conditions of the communities that folks living with food insecurity find themselves in.

Volunteering at Food Banks Mississauga has also had an impact on Aamal’s personal life:

“Volunteering makes me feel connected to the community and gives me opportunities to interact with different people whom I otherwise wouldn’t have met. It gives me a sense of purpose. It teaches me more about empathy and has helped me to make many meaningful connections — with the clients certainly, but especially with other volunteers and the staff here.”

When asked why she thinks folks should volunteer at Food Banks Mississauga, Aamal said:

“It will really give weight to the number of people we serve and the importance and necessity of the work done here. It will also help them connect with other members of the community and make meaningful friendships.”
